This is one of those movies you may have seen flipping by the channels.
Well - you shouldn't flip by, because it's FUNNY. James Garner plays a cowboy in an Old West Gold Rush town, looking for a job to get some money because (as he tells everyone) he's on his way to Australia. The town being a bit short on law and order, he gets hired to be the Sheriff.
He's the fastest man with a gun around - but that's not his preferred way of solving things. Whether it's using a bit of red paint to convince a prisoner to stay in the jail (the bars are back-ordered) or putting his finger in the barrel of a gun pointed at him, he'd really rather not be killing people.
It's from 1969, and by today's standards, it's impossibly clean - they never quite finish the sentence that his new deputy used to shovel horse shit. But still, highly recommended!
